I think it should be compuplsory.

Why should I have to wait for an ambulance to turn up as a result of me having a heart attack (true - 4 years ago) because some effing muppet wipes out whilst wearing shorts and a t shirt and needs treatment.

There was a whole debate about this in Ride a couple of years ago; personal choice, i agree with, but not when it is at the expense of someone else.

If must, let them do it, but first sign a waiver agreeing to go without any NHS treatment should they need medical attention.

Yet again, the voice of reason. Well said matey!

I voted yes. The min safety/protective clothing should be increased. Was coming back from Dorset on sunday and saw a guy on a gixxer thou wearing jeans tee shirt and some comfy shoes. All this at speeds where if he came off would be a good candidate for skin and bone grafts.

I know people are going to shout "nanny state" and well they might. But lets face it, its just common sense which seems to be lacking in this day and age. Some people just need protecting from themselves.

Was it not mooted about a while ago that helmets were to be compulserey for push bikes. Not a bad thing if you ask me. I make my 2 little'uns wear them. I ended up in hospital a few times when I was a kid after falling of my bike.

Having slung a bike up the road and stupid speeds before I'm glad that I was the sissy wearing full leathers gloves and boots.......it saved my hide!

Baz, obviously i was joking. Laughing
However, you mentioned the "nanny state"
It's been said that "the people" will always get the government they deserve/want. From the results so far on this poll I have to agree with that.

hhmmm well yes and no. Agree with what you say but here we're talking a specific point. Personal safety/protection. Surely most of the answers have come from personal experiences and common sense.

In this day and age people do need protecting from themselves. You've only got to look around the various websites of the ilk of Rotten.com etc to see the gene pool was contaminated by twats at some stage in the past.

Common sense is the key word/s here. Most here who take bikes and riding seriously have a bit in as much that they go in with eyes wide and cover themselves by wearing leathers etc etc. There are people who have or ride bikes because its the "in thing" to do.
Just tonight, I popped into Boxhill on the way back from Brighton. Not many bikes there and most people about were wearing all the clobber. Parked next to eachother were 2 GSXR 1000's. And sitting at the next table were 2 chaps talking the usual bollocks and boasts. One obviously had his girlie with him. None had any other protecton than their helmets. Guess what they got onto to ride away. Not to say that all GSXR riders are the same. But they obviously had the bikes not because they were bikes but because the were the in bike to have..... the ultimate toy so to speak.

So yeah in a way your right. The populace, or a minority of it, does need protecting from themselves and the nanny state government suits them down to the ground. But another point is who picks up the bill for the treatment when these people have a spill and need loads of costly surgery and aftercare/physio etc.
Hopefuly, I hope and pray, none here will need the backup of specialist plastic surgeons etc. Nearly all the people I've met thru the forum have had the sense to ride with the protection required. Long may it remain so.
