Chilli et all...

Someone touched on this barely in an earlier post... "ride like you'll meet yourself coming the other way..."

To expand on this use my rule of thirds.... Its simple its safe and above all its fool proof.

Only overtake in one third of the distance that you can see... So if you are doing say 80mph to overtake a car doing 60 do so in one third of your visibility.... That way if another bike also doing 80mph comes the other way it'll only travel as far as you.... 1 third of the visible distance, you have plenty of time to avoid a "situaution"... given the above scenerio teh vehicle coming towards you would have to be travelling at 160mph to get close to you... not likely!

Also what Baloo said... ALWAYS kep something in reserve.... and less is always more.... don't ride out of your comfort zone....

Fast is not fast.... Efficient is FAST! Clean lines, total control ride from the head and not the heart. Don't get carried away, just work on being clean and smooth.

A fast ride should feel "easy" not "scary" Smile

I second that on efficient - instead of having 4 or 5 peeps in front of me in the dry - I went to 1 or 2 in the wet simply cos I was totally committed to throttle control.

Also- it could have been 'cos a load bottled out - but hey!

Something I noticed before I stopped going on fast rides with loadsa people was this; When we got to our destination, it was always the same people who were complaining about 'some idiot blind car driver' who'd cut them up, whereas other people just seemed to not have these 'moments'. After a few weeks on the trot, you start to wonder how much you can put down to luck.

Sounds like you've had that start happening to you. Well done for noticing it, and even more well done for actually taking the second step of thinking about what might be the cause of it and how to stop it from happening.

Unfortunately I have no advice for you. You're a far more experienced rider than me, so it feels like it should be you dishing out the knowledge.

As for advanced training, I'd recommend it if you're intrested in staying alive, but not if you're interested in going really really really really fast. I'm a lot slower on the road after doing a course with the IAM. In the spring and summer of 2004 I was hooning it around like a complete madman, but in 2005 I've cooled it right off.

Also, do a track day. I don't care if I don't ride for the next month* as I got my adrenaline fix yesterday. It also shows you what can really be done on a bike when some fat old guy in pink day-glo leathers comes screaming past you on a 15 year old bike with half the bhp/penis-length.

(* which is quite convinient because that's how long I'm expecting I'll be off the road for Wink )

I agree - having "discovered" the track - my road-riding has "suffered" if you wish to see it that way.

As for advanced training - a morning with SJ and Phooey will do you a world of good.

As for the other "advanced training"- whoever they are, can't be arsed to give up weekends to be condascended to by ppl who ride by a system which is at once inflexible, archaic AND arbitrary.

Wivvy's Dad has summed up the essence of what's important in Chilli's thread.

... and that's a big 'if'.

In the last week, I've got the KTM covered in mud up on the downs, watched a supermoto race at Lydd, practiced wheelies on some private land and nailed the R6 round Brands. I've honestly never been happier on two wheels. Fast road riding scares the shit out of me, I just don't find it fun any more.

Maybe a healthy trend? I mean RR(Road Riding) is a total lottery- whereas all the factors re: other acivities are somewhat more loaded in the favour of YOUR error - as opposed to 3rd party's. Does that make sense?

Statistically, out of of all the people belonging to this forum that we know recently had a spill, it seems that the majority of them have come off whilst on one of the organized rides and not during their normal commuting to work (with the exception of Justine's bf Nick).
What that suggest it is that perhaps, on these occasions riding abilities are pushed a little further than skills would permit.
I have witnessed it myself that some rides which are meant to be "wobblers" often turn into wacky races, but whilst some riders are fast and know how to be fast, like chuffs for instance, without offences other unfortunately have fast machines but they push their handling abilities qute a bit, and if they'd stick to their knowledge within the limits of their true capabilities such incidents could be reduced.

hope this is read by all as an eye opener and not a slagging fest. pm me for aggro thanks.

Well I would. Not wanting to "start" anything but the last para in Bonus's post sounds really condesending. Dunno if its meant to be interpreted that way, but thats the way it reads.

Obviously I don't know either Bonus or Chilli so can't read between the lines so to speak. Its just the way it comes across.

Glad u said that Barry, as thats just what i thought, sorry

You are both wrong, Chilli is the last person I would be condesending to, her abilities on an R1 are superb.
Dissapointed you should think that and make a point of saying so. Mad
If you read Chilli's post that follows mine you will see that my comments echo her feelings.

Some more really thought-provoking comments from people, which was the whole point of this thread, so thanks again Very Happy

I have to put the record straight on something though - Bonus has always been a huge help & support, right from my 749s days when I could hardly go around corners Laughing

I've lost count of the number of days he's devoted to helping me improve on the bike. I've learned so much from following him and he'll always be my preferred biker buddie Cool

He has a different, more extreme maybe, attitude to many about road riding & what he wants to achieve with his bike. This may have come across in the wrong way, but I know he did not mean for his comments to be read that way.

Peace & happy, safe riding to all, whatever, wherever & however you do it Very Happy

Ahhh - busy busy busy, I've done 56 hours this week! But when I have time I'm usually on the Fazer forum Smile

I've booked two weeks off in Sep (I've only had three days leave this year!) And I will do a bit of a random tour of the Top of France - heading over East-ish. But I don't get my licence back until the 22nd... Embarrassed

96 in a 60 - got caught by a bike cop on the A24 southbound just before it splits into the A29... The magistrate was biased - when my solicitor mentioned I was at Boxhill prior to being caught - she said 'oh that's where all those hooligans hang out' Rolling Eyes I knew I was done for then...so she gave me the worst she could - 6 points on top of six points (they had expired - but were valid when I committed the offence(five months prior)).

Actually I better check my battery is ok...

Think its all been said already Chilli.

Stay on two wheels and just work through it. Everyone will go down from time to time we just have to remember the fun we have and the passion we all share for bikes.

Idea Lets face it who wants to be stuck in a steel coffin all the time!!!!! Idea
