as a rule I don't cross them, unless it is unavoidable - like a dead badger in the way or something..
if you are following me on a run and we come up behind a car and two miles of double white lines, then we will be following the car. However that is my personal preference and I wouldn't hold anyone else to it, you make your own choices |

Well as I started this thread.
Generally I hate doing it, but if theres miles of traffic at a stand still I will with care cross to filter past.
Very occasionally if I get stuck behind the proverbial Sunday driver wearing a hat and smoking a pipe with the speedo welded to 30 mph, and nothing but miles of solid lines then I will cross.
The thing to remember is, Mr plod can nail you with a reckless driving charge. and that will be six points. |

Whilst I voted Never, I must confess, I do cross white lines to pass bicycles etc and then ony when I'm certain it's safe so to do.
I never cross them to overtake a car/truck/other bike no matter how clear the road or how far I can see ahead. Ever. _________________

Absolutely Never ....at least for the next 8ish weeks, anyway ....then again, still, no, probably never ...just never in that much of a hurry to risk my life (turning in car parks withstanded...!!) ..If i can't see exactly where I intend to put the bike, then I won't go (...and white lines usually mean obstructed vision) |

Obviously what ever you do is your personal choice.
However Double white lines are there generally for the benefit of car drivers, with the performance levels of most modern bikes there are numerous occasions where overtaking is entirely safe. But of course you are breaking the law if you do.
Thus I do not think that those who do cross to pass are necessarily being irresponsible or risking there lives by doing so. |

You larf but years ago I was passed by some dude on a chopper (long story...) along the A30 just north of Basingstoke where it becomes dual carriage way with a LARGE central reservation he continued along the wrong carriageway at over 100mph in the face of oncoming traffic for about 1/2 a mile or so... before finally getting back to the left hand carriageway...
