Ok update.....decided to give the ol arse a test run and another gentle ride on the ZXR so went off to collect the missus ......arse?...not too bad
Bike .....fine on the way there ......went to come home and ......flat battery....?????...wtf ....its a brand new battery.....push the bike to my local friendly repair shop about 1/2 a mile along the road (cheers chris @ barneys bikes chatham) where i got it boosted ....then she decides to overheat an spit all her coolant out......WTF...i checked the cooling fan was cutting in the other day....well in the end i got her moving and got some air into the rad to cool her off ...got her home and began the task of tracking down the problem.....first things first...i got a spare alternator with her ....hmm was this telling me something?....checked the resistance of the coils....ok ...checked the output to be doubly sure ....ok....s'gotta be the regulator/rectifier....check the manual ...test the resistances as stated ......you guessed it ...fucked .....hmmm i wonder.....zxr400.....gpx400....maybe...just maybe ....eureka....the rec/reg from the gpx is an original kwaka part and does the job fits like a glove and has all the same colour wiring as per the manual ( more than can be said for the patent one i removed).
checked the voltage output 13.8 @ tickover......14.5@ 6k result.
Now for that cooling fan problem.....started her up and let her warm up ....no fan ...have i disturbed something whilst disassembling /reassembling ......locate the thermostat barely touch the connectors and wrrrrrrrr....the fan cuts in .....closer inspection reveals the push on connector is a very poor fit ....a little tinkering and hey presto....she lives healthy again.......phew .....i guess its to be expected from a 20yr old machine...just really wpuld have liked the wifes first trip to have been a little more refined.

lol they are particually uncomfortable aren't they! Wink

If you want lots of info and tips on them the best forum/site is zxrworld.co.uk Very Happy

I had the 250cc ZXR and that was even worse. It revved to 21500 RPM!! lol

Glad you got it fixed though and it wasn't something more serious Shocked

Here is a pic of one that was the same as mine except my one had a better swingarm:
