My Desktop isn't finding my wireless modem. The netbook and the laptop are both working fine
Nothing has been changed, it just stopped.
I've got one of those Belkin USB thingys which i've used since around Jan/Feb with no probs. The other night I lost connection but it returned about 10 mins later. Then about 1/2 hour after that it lost connection and now nothing.
When search for available one to connect to it used to find mine, and both my neighbours but now it finds nowt.
Is there anything I should try or do you think the Belkin plug in doodar is knackered (bit annoyed if it is, it's less than 6 months old) _________________

| Is the your PC "seeing" the dongle. Go to Tools, Network Connections and see if its there. Being in a usb port it should be a "Plug and Play" thingy so it sounds as if it may be iffy |

Have ya tried turning it off and turning it on again?
Sorry couldn't resist.
I had one of thoise Belkin USB wireless conectors. Wasn't impressed at all as it kept loosing the wireless copnection and only a reboot would find it agaion.
In the end I got a Belkin wireless network card and installed it me self. Works a treat now and took about 5 minutes to do _________________ Proud Member of the Boxhill Aerobatics team

Tyres need scrubbing in or you need a new battery
As BH says, see if your confuser can see the usb dongle first _________________

Axshually, I cocked up there. It shouldn't be "Tools", but "Control Panel" will take you to the right place........ |

Turn the modem off for about 3 minutes.
Turn it back on again, that should do the trick.
I think there might have been something up with t'interweb the other day - I had exactly the same problem.
And just as I was in the middle of writing this, we had a 15 minute power cut.

Is it Virgin or Sky etc... Virgin have done something to stop the wireless connections and we have had to get one of their routers
I am not sure this has anything to do with what you are asking though _________________

when i go through 'network connections' on the control panel it says that the Wireless Network Conection is not connected, and then under it shows the 'Belkin N wireless USB adapter'. Double click on that and it says windows cannot configure this wireless connection as another program is running it.
So, i go to my Belkin control panel and that says 'no wireless connection' as well. It giving a warning symbol between the computer and router AND between the router and the internet. However, i know there is no issues between the modem and t'internet.
The computer does know the USB is there, when i go to 'safely remove devices' it finds 'Belkin N wireless USB adapter'. I can stop and safely remove it. When i plug it back in it does the normal sound when something is plugged in, so it knows it is there again. Back to the Belkin Control panel, and 'no wireless connection' again.
I've tried to connect through windows rather than the belkin control panel, same result. no connection.
I know the modem is ok, i'm using it now!!!!, i'm on the netbook on the desk of the desktop and the signal strength is showing as 'excellent'
Any (sensible) ideas anyone?????
WD - i did try turning the modem off, left it for a while and switched back on. _________________

Probably not what you want to hear but, Run a cable from router to PC. If for reasons of location that isn't practical then I would look at Homeplugs (Devolo or the like)
On the subject of your problem. When you say windows had no connection either. Do you mean it wasn't able to configure the connection?
If so then if you look at the advanced tab for the wireless network adaptor, there should be a tick box to allow windows to manage this connection.
Personally I have had nothing but trouble with the manufacturers own wireless software. I normally don't even install it in the first place. Just the drivers and that's it. _________________ The lunatics have finally taken over the asylum |

I agree, definitely try and establish a hard connection (physical cable) first, this should show that the issue is with the wireless side of the equation only.
If you can't connect to the internet with a hard connection then the issue is more fundamental(router, provider or pc).
If you can find other networks but not yours then I would shut down power to the router and then power up, if this fails I would delete the current wireless conenction and create a new one using the same router (and account obviously).
Also, what electrical equipement is between your router and your laptop or are they all situated in the same room ? _________________ Working on getting pic of me on my 675... |

+1 more trouble than there worth, I went with the cable option after no end of problems with a wireless router ... _________________

I had changed it and used Windows instead of Belkin to connect. Still wouldn't connect or even find the modem.
I still think it is the USB itself, everything seems to point to it.
Although the computer knows it's there, i just don't think it is recieving anything from the modem (or the neighbours which it used to find as well) _________________

Thanks for your help matey, but i don't think you have read or understood what i've said.
It's not router or provider.
I've already i've turned the router off and on.
It said it cannot connect and therefore i can't see how creating a new connection would do anything when it cannot find a connection.
It nothing to do with electrical equipment interference, it wouldn't have working for several months fot it was, and I wouldn't be getting 'excellent' on the netbook in the exact place where the desktop in question is
But thanks anyway _________________

Try the adaptor on another PC, would be what I would do next. It does seem to be all pointing to a faulty adaptor. This ought to confirm it if thats the case. _________________ The lunatics have finally taken over the asylum |

Went to PC world, luckily I still had the box (but no receipt). To give them their due they managed to find that I did buy it from them. They searched all sales on the barcode and matched my debit card number with a sale of one.
Once that was verified they exchanged it, no quibble, no arguments.
He said don't need to anytghing other than plug it in.
Got it home, plugged it in
Nothing
Bugger
So, I did what I should have done before going to the shop, uninstalled the software and re-installed from the (now new) disc.
Now works fine.
Would that have worked if I had done that with the old disc , dunno, who cares, probably, dunno. But, it now works, yippee (and I have a brand new one _________________

I reckon you need to uninstall the software, and reinstall it, that should cure your problem
