Well it was yesterday, coming on to the Caterham bypass heading south 2 up with a Kawasaki sports bike infront on me who went for it, so I did the sensible thing and gave chase, only for him to shut off into the first bend, so sat behind him getting held up so went round him on the long way round side, as soon as we hit the straight he comes tearing past, only to slow down for the next bend where I had him again!!
Seriously why do people buy sports bikes only to go fast in a straight line, any wally can do that _________________ Anything you say may be taken down and used as evidence in a court of law, or boxhill forum!!

WMMST... My 3rd new Triumph can't wait to get it run in. I was really impressed with the Pirelli Corsa wet grip last night & the pipes sans baffles sound the dogs danglies, not sure my neighbours will agree _________________

Tiger 800 isn't very gutsy, went for Varadero then they brought the 1050 out, didn't try it but looks good. _________________ "Deja Moo" the feeling you have heard this Bullshit before |

Hmm...
They didn't have a Striple at Jack Lilley, so the guy is gonna call me when they get a new demo or part-ex machine in. Swinging a leg over though, it feels nice...
The Tiger 800 (road model) has a sweet, torquey smooth motor, and the gearbox is slick almost to a fault. I didn't realise it had actually gone into gear a couple of times and ended up kicking it up two gears.
Clutch actuates smoothly but I found it heavy for town work, like it had super-strong springs installed.
Suspension was good over bumps and speed bumps at speed but the front wheel seemed to want to track every groove and rut in the road. Not hugely noticeable, and not a major fault. However, I felt it got a bit squidgy once you put the power on, and powering out of corners was alarming at times as the front suspension rose up and the steering went all vague. Add to this the slightly slow transition from corner to corner, and I must say this was a deal breaker for me. Shame, as I really wanted to love it.
Other faults are purely ergonomic and personal preference. I wanted the bars to be an inch or two higher and further back, and the footpegs about two inches further back. I also suffered from numb, tingling hands after about half an hour.
All in all, not the kind of machine I was looking for. It did everything I asked of it admirably, but didn't inspire confidence. I suppose it's the price you pay for the off-road capability and that larger front wheel. This is, of course, all personal preference and opinion. I know vast swathes of the biking world love this machine...it just wasn't for me.
The Tiger 1050 felt a lot more precise and designed for the road. Again, the engine is sweet, has massive amounts of torque and healthy top end...far more power than you could sensibly use on the road. I did feel as though I was perched on top of the bike, with its high seat and low bars. It is a capable, long distance tourer and the handling is quick and accurate. The test model felt massively under-damped though, and got very bouncy at times All controls are top notch and in the right places. The only bad thing I have to say is the seat is hideously hard and uncomfortable. I'd need to have that sorted if I was gonna buy one.
Both impressive machines for their designated uses. Triumph seem to have got it right in terms of performance and looks IMHO. I'm gonna go back and test the 1050 and the Striple back to back.
Neither machine makes me want to trade in the Versys however. Yeah, it's underpowered and funny-looking, but Kwak got it absolutely spot on in terms of handling and ergonomics. |

Was it a brand new demo? I had no such issue when I rode the Tiger 800. Tracking lines in the road sounds like a shagged front tyre to me? I found the handling slick, confidence inspiring and precise for the style of bike, horses for courses & all that keep the Triple singing mid revs and upwards for maximum grin factor
The 1050 is absolutely a Trailie style road bike (as is the versys), whereas the 800 is a dual purpose bike alá GS...
There's always Destination Triumph in Bramley/Washington (although I have found them less than helpful on occasions), or Carl Rosner in Sarf Croydonia/Sanderstead.
End of the day if it doesn't float your boat or tick your boxes it's a no- gooer _________________

It was their courtesy bike, and I didn't check the tyres TBH.
I guess this sounds harsh. The 800 is a cracking machine but many small things added up to make me say no. I have never ridden a dual-purpose bike before so didn't know what to expect. Maybe it's something I have to get used to, but I'll cross that bridge when I need some off-road capability. |
