Seems that anything goes according to seasoned travellers. But really needs to have some off road capabilities.....can cope with rider and luggage...and be comfortable for long days in the saddle. French bikers were 'big' on Dakar style bikes at one point, so there must be some around. Can be lowered if needed, and any thing from 250cc up...but all going to seem slow compared to the Gixer
Perhaps having two KLR's on the trip would be an idea. _________________ Just call me Waki. |

Less than a year to go ! Better start thinking about dates and then booking ferries. _________________ Just call me Waki. |

OK Waki...
So, as discussed, ok for weeks 38 and 39 (end of Sept).
Looked at ferry options from St Nazaire (near Nantes) to Gijon (near Santander). As a guide, I put the dates 14/09 out and 27/09 back and got a 210 euros quote.
Alternatively, got similar dates on the Portsmouth to Santander crossing and got a quote of over 600 euros!!
I'm here, in the UK, until the 29th dec, would you be free to get together around a PC to sort smtg out? It would be easier than over emails.

Dates now added for this trip. And, after going through many combinations of dates and ferry time tables with Stephanie, the intinery goes something like........
Sunday 16th Sept. Overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St. Malo(Brittany Ferries). Drive to Nantes to meet Lil Mush, Monday 17th, before catching overnight GLD Atlantique ferry from St. Nazaire to Gijon (Spain) arriving Tues 12.00.
4-5 hour drive south to stop over, then onto Algeciras for the crossing to Morocco !!!!
Return ferries are....Sun. 30th dep 16.00 fron Gijon, arriving in St. Nazaire at 07.00 Mon. 1st Oct. Steph heads back to Nantes.......return ferry to UK is 16.30 from Caen to Portsmouth. (St. Malo crossing leaves at 10.30 so would have been a bit tight for time) Back on UK soil by 21.30 _________________ Just call me Waki. |

If it helps, here are the prices of the ferries booked so far. Overnight from Portsmouth to St. Malo and returning from Caen is £296. That's for one rider / bike and two berth cabin each way. The crossing from St. Nazaire to Gijon (Spain) can be as little as £89 rtn for the 17 hour trip. with a reserved seat. Add a cabin each way and cost is £180 rtn.
There is then the cost of the third crossing to Morocco to add. Fuel will probably be the biggest expense of the trip. Milage in Spain is around 1300 miles alone. Fortunately hotels, camp sites etc are not expensive.
A useful site for information and some suggest routes....

And some of the trails on the list....

Any one else interested ??? At this moment in time it's looking like a solo trip for me as Lil Mush now has a work project that clashes date wise. _________________ Just call me Waki. |

Might be a slight change to outbound ferry if anyone is interested. Ferries to Spain from Portsmouth normally depart mid week, so i plan to stick with the ferry from St. Nazaire but thinking of changing from Sunday night crossing to St Malo to the Monday morning boat to Caen instead. This then leaves a 3 - 4 hour ride direct to St.Nazaire plus a few quid saved on the fare. _________________ Just call me Waki. |

Sad to say, but i've decided to postpone this trip Really looking forward to the challange of taking this on, but at the same time, by nature, i want to have some if not all bases covered. However, times moving on, and i'm still not ready despite planning this trip for 18 months or so. Just a combination of several things, not all related to the trip, making me feel un-easy about heading South at this time.
Thanks to all that have shown interest, putting up with me going on about it at every oppertunity. I will do this, but not this year as hoped. _________________ Just call me Waki. |

Think he wants to come back too
Sorry to hear about it, I was sorely tempted but finances do not permit this along with forthcoming trip down-under _________________

Thanks. Gutted for sure, but i'd rather put the trip back and sort every thing out.....than to be chugging through Spain worrying that i'd forgotten something.
