Yes, a unique personality and a very talented man.
He sparked my interest in astronomy after I read one of his many, many books, an interest I have retained. I have spent many a happy night freezing my proverbials just to see wonders of the night sky.
I attended a lecture of his about 1972 in which he captivated me and the rest of the audience for about 2 hours with no notes, no slide show, no props and no microphone which he discarded in the first 30 seconds. Amazing!

Huh. Did this make it onto the main news channels seem to have missed it?
Definately a unique character and certainly was better than that 'Cox' bloke IMHO as a public face for the science.
