Poll about whetheryou ever ride in anything other than "proper" bike trousers.

I winced at a fella today who was wearing speedo's Shocked trainers and a lid on a ZX9. I was wearing Jeans & a bike jacket, the 5 mile ride being a calculated risk etc.

Occasionally I don't put my Proper bike trousers on, if i'm not going far and its a journey in 30's.

I always wear a jacket and gloves.

Sunday morninig though I had to pop to the shop at my old dear's and it was baking. It was only about a 1 mile trip and I went out in jeans and a t'shirt with gloves. First time I've ridden without a jacket on and it felt very odd, felt really exposed and it's not something I'd make a habit of, even if it did help with the heat.

I'd say 95% of the time I fully kit up.

Speedos though Shocked WTF, would love to see someone like that hit a swarm of insects at about 90mph Laughing

I've voted never. However, exceptionally when I took my bike literally across the road to fill up with petrol I didn't because I figured that I wouldn't actually be riding at more than about 10-15mph and I cycle faster than that without motorbike clothing on!

I polled never, even for short journeys. I have, however, just bought some Draggin' Jeans for hols. Whilst I commuted in them yesterday, I do not expect to do that going forward.

I only ever had jeans on my 125 but i think on a big bike the minimum will be proper armoured bike jeans. I know that a crash is a crash no matter what sized bike you are on but for some reason it seems more important on a big bike. After my first and only accident on a bike those jeans will have an extra padded arse! Embarrassed Laughing

Jeans occasionally if I think I'm only going as far as say dorking. Jacket always.

Only 'proper' trousers I have are wets, which are OK, but for a quick blat just a pain in the arse.

When I get a proper wage coming in it's time to think about serious protection.

Once or twice I have ridden in jeans, but always always always wear jacket, gloves and boots. Didn't like wearing jeans as there was a cold bit around the kidneys, mainly because I've eaten so many pies my leathers are now really uncomfortable.

But you lot would probably criticise the leathers I wear as they don't have extra bits of padding and armour and the like.

I voted "no way, never" ...but this reminded me of how I used to go out on my little KH100 back in the 80s .....T-shirt and thin cotton trousers was the norm in the summer!!! That said, I did always wear gloves ...and a pair of Derri boots ...and, occassionally, a double breasted leather jacket made of 'patches' of soft leather (which I sold about 2 years ago on e-bay as a 'classic 80s motorcycle jacket' for about £60 to a Japanese buyer Wink )

...and the very first time I went out on my bike was to visit a friend in hospital who had come off his bike and broken his femur - having run into a roundabout whilst looking back at another bike accident and (so he said) wondering whether he could help Laughing (we were young!!! Laughing )

It is amazing that any of us survived those heady, unprotected, days Laughing

Statistics have shown over many years that most accidents we are involved in happen within 5 miles of home.

So why wear only minimal protection close to home, and serious protection when going for a longer ride?

Picture the scene.......

You're bimbling along into town at 25mph, watching the pretty girls in their skimpy summer things, when all of a sudden......................................CRASH

A SMIDSY pulls out of a side turning, your bike ends up in his drivers door, and you're down the road with no skin left.

Hmmmm, still sound like a good idea to wear jeans?......................................... Rolling Eyes

For all our lady readers, substitute "BUILDERS" for "pretty girls" above......................... Wink

BTW, I voted for option 5

Only wear proper protective gear when out for fun. By proper I mean leathers all the way. However for my ride to and from work (2 miles or so each way) it's jeans, combat jacket and work boots. I know the risks and they are mine to take so no lectures please. I didn't even own a set of leathers until I got my current bike 3 or so years ago.

Although I more or less always wear mine, I only have textile trousers, so thats what gets worn. It's a bit bleeding warm this time of year though with textiles over jeans/trousers. Really need to get som leathers.
