It's too late to make the change. How many thousands of roads? How many millions of junctions? How many billions of road signs? It would be prohibitively expensive to implement and there are much better things for the govt. to spend our money on than something as unnecessary as swapping driving sides.

To be honest, I don't care. I can drive on both sides of the road without issue. As long we change one go and not gradually Laughing I am easy.

I voted no...

1) The financial cost would be Huge. Roads and motorways would need redesign and jucntions changed. Thats befre anyone looks at road markings, Surfacing Signage. In short, the whole road network and infrastructure would need redesigned nad rebuilt.

2) How many accidents, fatalities etc would the first month or so contain. In honesty, it would take years for everyone to get used to it.

Now - Changing from MPH to KPH - I think thats something that should be looked at. Yes thre will be a huge cost but as the roads in France and Eire are in KPH Im thinking its would be safer to make the switch.

Left, right, left! right?
which side of the road to ride and travel on...

You know it's initially because of the French (and Napoleon's conquests) that spread driving on the right side of the road.

In the beginning all countries actually travelled on the left...
Then when Germany decided to invade the rest of Europe rightism spread further.

Yeah it tickled me that there is a sign 5 miles in from Harwich dock that reads 'Remember to drive on the left' If you've managed to get that far on the wrong side of the road I'd be amazed Laughing

rolling on the floor laughing

99.9999999999999999% of UK road users find the whole concept of driving alien anyway, so any change will confuse their tiny little brains further still...

I voted no for that reason

..And when I first moved here, I spent the first few weeks slamming my right hand into the driver's door. Took me ages to get into a pattern for setting the turn indicator and downshifting as I was accustomed to doing both simultaneously.

I think changing side in a country where the roads network is in its infancy must be relatively easy, but for a country like the UK, hmmm.... good luck!

They can't even seem to change currency for starters... Wink

Also, I don't believe it would reduce the cost of car manufacturing one bit. The right-hand driving has always been an excuse to inflate the prices! What with the volume of cars produced anyway...

But then being French, you all know where I stand on that issue! Rolling Eyes

As someone has already stated...99.99999% of British Motorists can't drive anyway so what difference would making them drive on the RIGHT side of the road make? Don't get me started on this one..... Twisted Evil
I voted YES,
I drive / Ride in the UK and Europe without to much trouble but admit I do sometimes make the odd error, like after a coffee brake, jump on the bike and head off up the road on the wrong side..opps. easily done.
One good reason is that it would reduce the number of accidents that involve foriegn trucks on our roads, normally due to the fact the driver has a huge blind spot near the front offside. When going to overtake another vehicle he / she is unable to see a smaller vehicle that might just be in this blind spot. Yes this would be a huge project and at great expense but I think in the long run we would benifit.

when we lived in Nigeria in the 70s they switched from one side to another ... using a novel (and uniquely African) approach:
The Police and Military vehicles changed one week, and the rest of the population the following week !!!!!!! Shocked

Police chases must have been GREAT fun !!!
