Hello all

As you may have noticed I've been trying my hand at shooting track days recently. It's something I really fancy pursuing, tho at the mo I don't have entirely appropriate equipment cause it's way out of my usual field. But I'm givin it a whirl lol.

Anyhoo, those of you who do track days.... I wanna know, what do you look for in a photo you'd want to buy?

Because everyone I've spoken to so far seems to want something different!! Some want their knee down, some want a tight shot of them on the bike, some people want a bit of scenery/cones etc to give some context on where they are. Or them duffing someone up etc.

So whaddya reckon?? Opinions please, cheers Very Happy

These are from Brands & Bedford, some are further away, giving more of an impression of the surroundings, not just the bike. Is that something you'd like?

Very good pics Emma.

I don't do track days now, but if I still did, I'd be very happy with the first picture at the top of the page. I think head-on pics work best.

Just my opinion FWIW

PS I'd want ugly buggers Photoshopped out tho'.................... they know who they are..... Laughing

Emma these are two of my favourite shots I've had done over the years. Like several of the (excellent) shots you've posted above, they give a sense of speed and when I look at them I can still 'feel' what I was doing at the time. Some of the official photos from Monday's Brands day could've been shot on a local roundabout Rolling Eyes

Personally I think the ones with a lot of background info detract from the subject but it needs to be balanced by not going in too tight and losing any relationship with what's going on.
They can be educational too, like we now know Gary needs to get his feet up on the pegs and you know what he needs for Xmas .... new boots Laughing

Great photos. What camera/lens did you use?

people want pics that flatter them and their riding and to prove they can get knee down or wheelie etc, panning shots make them look fast Smile

Great pics PC!

I would agree with Gixxer24/7, any flattering shots are appreciated. I also like the ones of people being duffed up or duffing someone up, as you have above.

One style I always enjoy to have one of in the collection is as below (I think these work better though when can see the rider's face):

....and anything like this. This sort of photo will need knowledge of the track to know where this is likely to happen (although I cannot remember from where at Brands I took this Embarrassed

)

Front on shots are easier to get, especially in succession on a "slow" corner you can rattle off each bike that comes round and get good results, shots that involve panning generally at least halve the number you can take you will invariably miss two more bikes after the one you have shot.

Everyone who wants track day pictures wants flattering pictures - i.e. big lean, knee down, overtakes, etc.

These are a few of me, which I like for different reasons, BUT they are far from technical perfection as photographs...

Might be worth a look at Chuffsters site - www.rssouthern.co.uk he takes lots of racing pictures and has had some published in MCN and on the web

for brands stand just where it starts going uphill to druids for paddock bend pics, also in the infield for the start of cooper straight, stand up the hill to avoid the fence, also druids itself can be good but fence is a nuisance, unless you apply for media pass Smile

Things I look for in a TD pic

1/ Close in shots of me leaning over, knee down as if I know how to ride properly.

2/ Pics of me into a corner with 1 or 2 other bikes, highlighting we're having a scrap (again preferably looking good/fast

3/ Wider shots with some track/corner scenery or even a banner of the location in background.

4/ Close cropped shots just highlighting that I am riding fast on a track.

I like the one of me with the two other bikes......meets criteria on points 1,2 and 3. Smile

Can't wait to see your full set of pics from Brands. Well done madam.

I'm noticing also that it depends on a person's style of riding what angle you should shoot them from.... Cause Gaz & HFB look best from v different angles, cause of the way HFB hangs right off the bike.

Hi Emma,

You got some great shots there, pretty much covers what I would like to see in track day pics.
As others have said, anything that's flattering making there riding ability look as good as possible.
Good lean angles, knee down if I could reach that far, possibly more from the front as you have of teacher and HFB, they look awsome. I would be more than happy with them. The one of HFB with a bike either side of him is quality.
What iv'e seen so far your pictures are far bette than the official photographers. I would suggest that you apply for a press pass and get on the case asap. Are you a member of The Association of Photographers or any other affiliation. They don't get an official press pass but the AoP do their own version which should get you into restricted areas, when I was a member I never used mine but I knew others who did get into restricted areas with it.
The national union of Journalist's (i think that's what they are called) is the best card to get but not easy.
I think you stand as good a chance as anyone.
I look forward to seeing more of me.
