oh and I've forgot to mention that more and more as i wade through heavy traffic in London I notice that not only 80% of the drivers are on the mobile but there is this new wave of brand spanking new jap cars that have dvd screen in the middle of dashboard and on the back of the head rest, which is ok for passengers but, not for the drivers watching the latest dvd. Tell me how that lot are going to be concentrating on their driving when Blade III is on? And how is it that such devices are allowed to be fitted in the front of a car?

1stgarry makes a good point. You all do but what if you could ride just as safe with music on? garry says i need all my senses make no mistake they are all on full alert when im riding the music isnt so loud i cant hear other vechiles that would be stupid. I have it on to sort of pass time but it doesnt distract me like you all thing it would. As someone mentioned earlyier they use intercoms to train learners. BMW also make a helmet with built in radio! Surely they would have tested if it was safe or not?

I used to listen to music when I had a 50 mile commute every day, then I nearly got run over by an ambulance I didn't hear which made me realise it's the most stupid thing you can do.

Not only are you not aware of sounds around you, your attention is on the tune thats playing and trust me you'll be singing along rather than observing surrounding traffic and looking in your mirrors.

If you get bored on a ride then make stupid names out of peoples numberplates instead Wink

Passing your test doesn't make you immune from accidents. Isn't it better to have ALL your senses working while riding? The highest rate of accidents is from the "just passed my test" brigade.

What that should read is, "I've been lucky so far".

I really don't want to be posting a get well soon message on here for you.
Do yourself a favour and wait till you've got a bit more bike riding experience!

fair enough gary but all the

"just passed my test" brigade crashes.
Are because their on a high from passing their test, i felt it when i passed, As soon as i got back to work and heard the good news they gave me the keys to a bigger bike, take it for a spin they said . Not on my life i was on a massive high and would have killed myself. I know im not emune to accidents but when im involved in one it wont be my fault i can assure you. And yes i do lack experience and i am cautious of this fact, This is what will cause me to make a mistake Example not Being able to judge other vechiles speed. That wont be because of the music it will be because of the lack of experience.

alleluyah!!

Those who choose to listen to music on the bike do so at their own risk and peril, and are more than willing to pay for the damages to themselves and other if any occurs, I take my hat to this young man who, at an early motorcycling age already shows to be sensible enough to ride observing due care and attention. hopefully he is not going to kill anyone in the process, because as he said it, nothing but the ultimate is going to modify his confidence.

Thumbs up just be careful. like my farther told me is what i'd tell my son.

I need to make one last observation on the subject of this thread.

Fair enough, we all appreciate it is not legal nor safe to ride with headphones on, but then i can't help but noticing that... 90% of bikes out there have aftermarket cans / exhausts systems fitted. This is infact the most popular mod that people get as soon as they get a new bike, more often than not these cans are very loud.

As a result, i have seen that half of my mates that ride with me and the majority of superbike wannabees out there are using those orange or green noise reducing earplugs in their earholes, either because of the noise their cans emit or to try and soften the wind noise cause by the helmet drag when riding at decent speed (70mph and above), so... my point is... how can you hear other noises, like police sirens, ambulances or even car horns when u have earbuds and loud cans? what is the difference between that and listening to music?

I must admit that I find the wearing of earplugs a curious thing.
I understand from the health point of view that riders want to protect their hearing, and it's the windnoise that does the most damage to our hearing rather than our exhausts (unless you happen to run a V&H system on a Buell Hehe ).
But windnoise can be greatly reduced by wearing the right helmet.

So, in an ideal world we would wear a wind reducing lid, fit the quietest exhausts to our bikes and not travel above 40mph!!
Then we could do away with earplugs.
It's not going to happen is it?!!

And I happen to believe that my (not guiet) exhaust is definitely a safety feature on my bike.
And I don't bother with earplugs. Smile
And I can hear the traffic around me Smile

i hear you 1stGarry.... but this is your personal statement and you are an exception to the norm, I was hoping to get a response as to the comparison or difference in between music via headphones and loud cans + earplug situation.... i guess your reply was a little off target. no offence intended.

I love riding with ear plugs. Not really to bothered about wind noise, but it gives a a less intense riding experience which (for me) smooths out my riding.

I have race cans on both bikes, the CBR's can is not much louder than standard and the Zeds quad flame throwers are only slightly more fruity than original Embarrassed

I can hear everything and choose not to wear earplugs as I don't get on with them. Also an exhaust tone is an ambient sound, it is not going directly to your eardrums. Another point is that it's the vibrations that damage your hearing and eardrums not the pitch of the sound.

Mind you, if it weren't for the fact that I get them by the bucket load form work, I probably wouldn't bother

Earplugs make the existing noise quieter

Music injects more noise into the air, which could mask existing sounds.
