After having had my iPhone for three years, I actually have actually got round to loading my CD collection on it Embarrassed this means that I have started to listen to music through headphones whilst I work for the first time since using my 'walkman' the mid 80s old Laughing

Now I know some peeps on here like to listen to music while they ride but I must admit that I don't think it is for me after leaving it on and driving the van home last night....

I totally lost track of what gear I was in and discovered I was revving the nuts off the poor old diesel engine when I turned the sound down to hear what the funny noise was Rolling Eyes Laughing

So riding whilst listening to music is a no go for me, how about you?

I tried it recently with the radio function on my Scala. Once I discovered I was giving away some of my concentration to listen to the music; I switched it off. So it is a no from me.

I used to on the Rebel, until my last accident. I wasn't listening to music at the time, but I thought if I had been I bet I'd have got in trouble with the cops who rocked up. So I thought from then on it's not worth it. Plus I probably need all my concentration to handle the big scary ZRX lol.

It's a no for me, riding requires all the concentration and I don't want to be distracted by getting into air guitar mode while listening to AC/DC at full volume.

Its a no for me.

I did try it for a couple of commutes and a solo bimble when I first started riding but I found that I couldn't hear the engine was doing or what was happening around me.

Even if I get a call while Im out nad about I pull over to talk even though I have the hands free kit.

Didn't like it & Don't think its safe IMHO.

All the time here too as I've found that my ipod has a volume control and I can simply set it to a level that allows me to hear the engine noise and what's going on around me. In the same way that a car stereo can be dangerous if it's set to drown out everything else around, so can one in your lid but set to a sensible volume I don't see a problem.

I use a Creative Zen Xfi. The in ear buds supplied with it have excellent sound quality and are useable under a lid, I've had no problems when putting it on.

I attach an MP3 to my intercom on long journeys and have worked out a volume where I can still hear the bike, and talk to the pillion without it being to disturbing. I can also tell from the virbration of the bike what gear I am in or should be in.
Out of interest those of you that said 'you like to hear the engine/whats going on around you' wear ear plugs?

I wear plugs yes. Mainly because the plugs remove most of the wind-noise that my lid and new wind-shield generate around my head but they do let in some of the noise which lets me hear car and bike engines that are close enough to me that I should know EXACTLY where they are.

I found that when when I had music piped into my lid I was listening to the music rather than to what's going on around me and a sense of paranoia / over-cautiousness had stepped in and tended to make me second guess myself (Particularly at junctions). I also found that when I was listening to a faster track I gained a sense of impatience that I didn't feel comfortable with either.

Agreed the plugs do reduce the sounds of traffic and engine noise but I found that the music drowned out the rest of it.

Im not saying its not safe to listen to music but personally I didn't feel comfortable with the total loss of surround / ambient noise that even with plugs in lets me know that if there is something close to me / another rider overtaking me or in my blind spots (I still do lifesavers, use my mirrors though and regularly glance at the rev-counter and speedo though).

Only on motorway jouneys really. I have an autocom with in lid speakers and plug the ipod in to that.

Occasionally I have stuck the ipod in for a commute, but it's very infrequent that I do.
