The Hydraulic clutch on my Bandit 1200 operates in the last 1/4" of travel farthest from handlebars is this a sign of wear and the plates need replacing or can it be adjusted by renewing the fluid.
It is not slipping or causing a problem yet but i dont want to leave it until it does. the bike has done 49000 miles with the last 10000 mostly in town with a lot of clutch use.
Help Please |

I have had the clutch plates replaced but the operation is still in the last 1/4"
of travel and when the engine is hot it does not like changing gear 1-2 ok but 3 stiff and very difficult to select N.this was a problem just before clutch replacment but i thought it would be cured with replacement.Oil has only been replaced 700 miles ago!
More advice please |

Cheers WD
I have now renewed the clutch fluid as you first suggested [i assumed this was done when clutch was replaced.not so] It has made a big difference.
replacing the seals on the cylinders will go on my jobs to do list. |

unfortunatly the bleed cure was very short lived so i have replaced seals in both cylinders and bled thru[bleeding after seal replacement was a pig] now the clutch is fine but the symptoms persist. sometimes wont change down from 3 to 2 or 2 to n . any other suggestions please. |

What age is the bike? is it the standard rubber hose? could it be the hoses are perished and or they are leaking around the joints? _________________ Anything you say may be taken down and used as evidence in a court of law, or boxhill forum!!

Might be a daft question, but is the chain too tight? The chain needs some slack in i (usually shown on the swing arm or chain guard, if not in the manual)... a chain like a bow string can make changing gear tricky. _________________

The Bike is a 97 and it has a standard hose, there does seem to be a slight leak around the joints. when i cleaned out the master cylinder there was some black sludge inside i had assumed it came from the seals maybe the hose is perishing too.
i will get a replacement but any tips on bleeding methods would be good.
I had recently adjusted the chain giving 20 to 30mm of free play and i must admit it was nearer the 20mm i have slackend it off to the 30mm this has improved things a little. but not cured yet.
Thanks paul. |

A slack chain is usually better than a tight one. Strip clutch release mechanism, clean everything, re fluid and bleed. A Mityvac is a good tool for brake and clutch bleeding. _________________ Why pay someone else, do it yerself |

just had a thought on this ......what oil are you using, some zooks dont like fully synthetic some even prefer good old mineral . i always found semi synthetic on my bandit 12 gave the smoothest gear change, oh and if your relpaceing the clutch line then do yourself a huge favour and opt for braided. _________________ Rust is lighter than carbon fibre! |

Ive now replaced the oil which was motorex formuler which should be a quality semi oil in case this was a simple cure.i used petronas semi syn this time but no improvment has been made.
I have now found that if i gently push the gear changer down before touching the clutch i can change up a gear ok. and if i lift the changer up in the same way before a down change it will select the gear.Does this point towards a gearchange mechanism problem? |

sounds like it's not returning to centre each time. Make sure the external mechanism is moving ok... if it is then the problem could well be with the centering spring (which is like a large clothes peg spring inside the gear box) it controls the movement of a pawl/peg catch mechanism that selects each gear. (assuming zooks work the same way as Honda's I've dismantled). I have had it that the centering spring has kicked slightly on it's shaft so it jams. No idea how much of a job this is to look at on the Bandit.
come to think of it... firecrackers cbr600 did something very similar... & that was down to the external mechanism being partially seized. A bit of tlc on the gear lever pivot and rod joints fixed that...
The gear lever pivot on the bandit is part of the foot peg IIRC... strip that down, degrease it, clean up if necessary with fine emery or wirewool , grease, reassemble... _________________

Cheers Duncan it was the gear leaver partialy siezed on footpeg shaft.
stripping cleaning and greasing has cured the problem.
Zooks gearbox rep is intact. my maintenance skills are not. |

So by improving your gearchange technique, you did in fact highlight the actual problem. Well done..... |
