Went to Bury Hill today and saw something that made me think hmmmm
Four guys were parked infront of me, they had a ZX6R, GSX-R750, GSX-R1000 and an R1. They looked REALLY young and I just had to ask. The ages are as follows:
ZX6R - 18
GSX-R750 - 18
GSX-R1000 - 19
R1 - 18
This frightened me. I think it's absolutely insane for them to be riding these types of bikes at their age and by the way they were talking it sounded like none of them had insurance, possibly even no licence as they laughed off my comments about high insurance. They all left in a rage of testosterone fuelled vertical wheelies. Now I wish I had the guts to jump on an R1 and pull huge wheelies at 18 years old by for gods sake!
What do you think? _________________ Fish are friends, not food |

I dont think generalizations should be made... I personally wouldn't have wanted to get on a bike like an R1 when I was in-experienced.. but who's to say someone's inexperienced just because they're 18.. they could've been racing for years already...
Equally I could come up with a lot of examples of older people who shouldn't be on the roads at all let alone machines capable of triple figure MPH just have a read of the Argus to see someone who's 27 (no spring chicken there) who killed himself, his passenger and a completely innocent man in another car by driving his BMW like a loony...
I think it would be better to say dont let stupid/inexperienced/crazy people on superbikes
p.s. i wonder what the chances are that any of those bikes were restricted as they would HAVE to be given their ages... |

p.p.s if you are right about them having no insurance then that is something worth getting pissed off at..... they could kill someone and probably face 2 or 3 years max in prison... and who would fit the bill? Us.
I think the penalty for riding/driving with no insurance should be far far far higher. |

Age,,,,Mate of mine many years ago passed his test on a 125 just after his
17 Birthday,, the 125 was borrowed as the only biking he had done was on a geared ped, not twist and go. He passed the test..(you had to be
really sh*t not to in them days)..so he then went straight out and bought himself a Z1000.
All I can say is he did'nt have it very long and he did'nt sell it.
It was fecked,,trashed it and all because he just could'nt handle it.
Insurance..
How much would you think an 18 year old on a bike like the R1
would have to pay for Insurance?...
We are talking a lot of cash,,I think more than most could afford.
So if your local paper has a section from the local Magistrates Court
have a look and see what the fines are for Riding/Driving without
insurance.
Our local courts are handing out fines of around £30.00-£100.00.
+ points only payable if you get caught. So the choice is yours
Pay £1000.00+ for insurance or pay £30.00-£100.00 fines. |

They'd probably get laughed at for trying to insure a R1 at 18, the insurance on my Trumpet was £1111 (granted I'd only passed my test 3 weeks earlier and only had 1 years NCB). I remember when I was getting quotes online Norwich Union wouldn't quote me happy on a Honda CB600 Hornet until I was 30! _________________

i totally agree with jammy to think you are to young to ride a superbike is ridiculuos look at the virgin r6 racers.they are young and inexperienced (not).if the law requires you to have ins,2years of road use,cbt whatever, they should be entitled to use the road, does not mean that you have to be young to qualify,i have only been riding a superbike for 6 months(i know it's only a triumph) but i am allowed to ride without these resrictions dosen't make me a better rider than jam infact jam would knock spots off of me if he didn't have a girls bike i think that there should be some way of displaying your crudentials on the bike so that the police could stop these people from braking the law,i do know that everyone on this forum(except for captin moto )has broken the speed restriction, but,we hopefully do it in the right place and safely.i certainly do respect the speed if i know that there is a school or something up ahead
i would put the responsibility on the parents to make sure that these young riders do not flought the law,i made sure that my son had all the relavant docs e.t.c before he went on the road and i certainly would let the police know if i knew that he was riding a bike that he was not entitled to................enough said _________________ |

As long as they are complying with all the relevent rules regarding restriction, insurance etc then why not. I dread to think what the cost of insuring an R1 at 18 is though. _________________ The lunatics have finally taken over the asylum |

i only passed my test last year, went out a bought a zx6 and insured it for peanuts tbh. I dont think age is a factor, i've seen plenty of old gits ride like total tossers too .If you've got the money and it's what u want, go for it. _________________ Trackdays.................... hmmm maybe, i think it depends quite a few things, all insurers ask different questions. No one will ever work out how they calculate premiums _________________ Trackdays.................... Because golf is for faggots! |

At 18 you're a lairy git who is likely to take stupid risks on a bike, and you think you're indistructible! I know it's a generalisation, but it holds true for the majority of young bikers.
There are less young bikers having accidents than "older" bikers, but only because there are less young bikers on the road.
But young bikers have a higher percentage of accidents per mile than older riders, and experienced riders have even less accidents per mile.
So logistically it makes sense to restrict the bikes available to young 'uns until they've got that "all essential experience".
In a roundabout sort of way this is already happenning - insurance is so high for younger riders that most of them can't afford R1s, Blades etc.
And why?
Because they keep crashing them! _________________ Adventure before dementia. |
