In my opinion, getting the exact same bike again is a mistake. Now before anyone gets on their high horse or anything let me tell ya why.
While the bike (any bike) you had originally was the best in the world (everyones is by the way) if you try and replace it with another after its crashed or stolen etc. It's always a disappointment. Ask Divvy what she thought of her second MTX or what I thought of my Second CBR600. It just ain't the same. Better to try something different imho. Even if you stay with the same style of bike.

True I went from a Chipper to a Chopper.....totally different. On a more serious note I found I could very easily adapt to the same make, but if I swithced to say a Suzuki to a honda I'd be picking holes in it. A radical change is easier imho

Almost forgot. Congrats on the new bike Johnny. I hope it gives you as much pleasure as your original did. Well done on not letting this mishap put you off as well.

When was the last time you adjusted your own chain?

I just asked Mike and he prefers the ER5 he had now to the ER5 that went bumpity bump down the A3.

I also had an RD125 when I was 17 and I much prefer the RD125 I have now to that one. (which I didn't crash, the engine died a horrible death).

Maybe we are both just lucky. I see what you are saying and it is probably true in most cases.

Hi all , just seen this thread which caught my eye.

Now I started in the fast lane, I passed my bike test at 30 fell off 2 weeks later and trashed the bike. I had it fixed and got straight back out on it and didn't think about the spill (much).
I was in self destruct mode as the wife had just left me so the spill and maybe biking as a whole was a way of killing myself(?) sounds silly now I know but at the time .......
I left the area I lived in and moved to London, had a crap job and jacked it in. Now comes the point of all this rambling, I became a courier!! Yes, had no job, no money and a bike, lived in London so what do I do Despatch rider...
Loved it, gave me the freedom to get over the last few months and learn to love biking for what it was. FUN.
I was invincible, I could rude through the city and miss everything, up the motorway between every thing at 120 and make money at it too!!
I was at one with my bike and could do anything I needed to even if the bike wasn't up to it I found a way..
THEN I got squashed, my bike was written off I got a hire bike and then had the BIG one (for me anyway) opposite direction pulled into my path.
I was lost , it was my lively hood and my way of life, I had no bike and had to move away.
A friend let me stay at his and I got my bike back a year later, fixed it and promptly stuffed it up the back of a truck. My confidence was all but gone.
I bought a newer one, the TLR, I now have a new found respect for my bike and the fact that I don't want it to explode in a hail of plastic if I cock it up. I HAVE lost the edge, it still scares the poop out of me, BUT I still enjoy it. I will never sell my bike, I love riding too much.
Riding in a group is good, but everyone tends to overstretch to keep up as said earlier.
Keep at it Chilli, ride at YOUR pace ,enjoy it and have fun, it's one of the few freedoms we have in this world.
I'm not fast and not clever BUT I enjoy a ride out.

Ride safe

Si

Hi Chilli

New to this forum but not to this topic. I've been where you are and in fact am just coming out of the longest period I've had where I just couldn't ride my bike.

Everyone is different. For me after my last crash in Oct (cars and transit vans like to use me for target practice!) the answer was to get a smaller bike - my GPZ. Being able to just throw that bike about helped me regain my bike legs but once I was back on my ZZR the fear factor took over again. If you ove your bike(s) like I do you don't want to see them in pieces. I simply could not stop thinking about crashing (even though the last crash was not my fault). On the GPZ, as its a bit tatty anyway it never really bothered me that much and slowly the confidence started to come back.

I still found the ZZR harder to relax on and eventually decided that if I was to improve my riding I should look at other bikes too. I bought my VTR and I do think it has been a huge help. I'm lucky that I am able to keep all three bikes. If the R1 is your dream don't give it up, find a way to make it work for you. I am now much more relaxed and happy on all three of my rides - I still have bad days where things just won't hang together and when I do I just slow down and take it easy.

Try not to get too frustrated at yourself. Its a horrible feeling when you know you can do it, but for some reason just can't get it together.

You don't have to ride a bike fast to ride it well.

Further training is a good idea. If you're not sure try BikeSafe - cheap, fun, and packed with useful tips and info. And at 2 riders to 1 copper you get enough personal feedback to let you know how you could improve.

I have just signed up with a RoSPA group and start my training on Sunday. You can only improve a bike so far and then its time to work on the rider. As with most things in life, its never to late to learn some new lessons.

Good luck whatever you decide and hopefully see you down at Box.

Just take it easy for a while to get your confidence,
my sister (giggles) has had quite a few close calls which has shaken her up, but she just keeps on going (but a bit slower) Laughing

You're based in Surrey as well. If you are worried about meeting lots of people at once maybe arrange to meet someone outside Boxhill and then come in with them. I'm just round the corner and would gladly help you over that inital "who do I talk to" difficult bit!

It can be very hard to just turn up somewhere an assert yourself. Don't let your shyness stand in the way of making some new friends, getting on some rideouts and best of all helping to improve your riding.
