I understand where you're coming from chilli. On monday I had a head on with a car! Going round a corner just fine, corners tightens up and I drift a bit wide onto the white line. Car was coming the other way, only a small road so he's using the whole lane and I go straight into the driver side front corner. Some how I was thrown clear and I'm only nursing some bruises and a swollen thumb, the bike however was completely knackered, I'm waiting for a quote for the damage at the moment (third party insurance was possibly a false economy).
Back to my point however. After geting into bikes about 5 years ago they have completely taken over my life, I'm obsessed. I buy all the mags watch all the races aand go for a ride whenever possible. After this accident however I'm seriously considering hanging up my leathers for good. Maybe I'll feel different when the bikes fixed and my bruises have gone but at the moment my confidence on a bike has completely gone.

Oh dear.... you apexed too early and could not hold your exit line...

Don't hang up your leathers, learn from this mistake and become a better more confident rider. Learn to read the road further ahead, use the convergence point to judge the radius of the bend, and hone your cornering skills to ensure that you can get round...

The thing that is really doing my head in is the fact that it was all my own fault. A complete lack of judgement. I've done a bikesafe course and learnt all about watching vanishing points etc. Sitting by the road waiting for the recovery truck and looking at the bike I couldn't believe how lucky I was to still be alive, it really was that bad. It was shear luck i was thrown clear and not straight into the windscreen or under the wheels of another car.
I have always known about the dangers of biking but this really has rammed them home. I don't have a family or even a girlfriend at the moment. If I did I don't think I would even be discussing this, I don't think there would be any chance of me getting on a bike again. As it is I think I'm going to make the most of the timeout, get on the bus and see how it goes.
At the moment I'm just waiting for garage to call with an estimate (if it can be fixed at all). So depending on what they say the decision to quit bikes might be made for me.

Hey Johhny,

Don't be so hard on yourself. Everyone is human, so we all make mistakes. Ok so you fell off your bike, you could just have easily walked off the pavemnet infront of a bus, or had a serious accident at work.

What hurt you was a lapse in concentration, that could have happened anywhere... Its not the bikes fault so please don't blame it. Would you move to a flat if you ran over your foot with the lawn mower? Would you say gardens were dangerous... no course you wouldn't?

Its not your bikes fault, bike aren't dangerous by design... you made a mistake, and were unlucky. Life goes on... Learn form it and move on.

There's plenty of people on the forum who'll help you out with spannering to get your bike straight again.

Hope to see you back on it soon.

Johnny,
I have also done a bikesafe course, however, if you really wnat a good one for the road, try Rapid Training. I have done it twice now and can thoroughly recommend it. Especially the first time.

Johnny

I have had two bad accidents in my biking career, and the first thing I did was buy another bike.

Everyone expected me to give it up but the buzz I get, the people ive met, the places ive been have made for a brilliant time. Its not just a bike its a way of life.
Youll be back, I promise Wink Smile

Thought I would update you all. The bike is dead, frame is bent so that is the end...................for that one.
After alot of thought my life without bikes does not bear thinking about (however sad that sounds). So I will be getting another one as soon as possible along with joining the IAM just to be on the safe side.
I hope to see you all in the not too distant future.
How could I have ever considered giving up bikes, without them I would never have met any of you lovely lot.

Johhny, sorry to hear about that bike and well done for keeping going. You said that the driver was using the whole lane, it may be worth making an insurance claim as he was also running wide. It may not get all costs recovered, but you may get something back.

I am also only TPF&T and will fight for everything. I have had two claims and have recouped all the money and got them to admit liability each time.

I pick my new bike up on friday Very Happy
Things are moving fast in my life at the moment.
In reply to Baloo, the accident was my fault totally. When I say the other driver was using the whole lane I mean that it was only a small road but they were their side of the line, there was just no room for running wide, as I discovered.
Sorry for the rather dramatic earlier post. I was feeling pretty low and I got a bit histerical. Oh and sqeaky, I'm not a quitter, never have been never will be.
See you all soon Very Happy
