I don't wear one myself, but the way I see it is, wearing one WILL make ya more visible to the other peeps you are riding with. It WILL make ya more visible to the peeps who are on the lookout for bikes (they will spot ya sooner) It WON'T make any difference to the ones who ain't looking and couldn't give a stuff about anyone but themselves.
As for headlights making ya more visible. I once watched a documentary about camouflage. I saw a tank made to disappear using lights on the side of it! Has made me wonder about their usefulness ever since.
The only time Hi-vis will ALWAYS make ya easier to spot is at night, even then it's only if ya directly in front of someone though.
As Dave has said, we will always wear or do whatever makes us feel safe, I still run with my headlight when riding on m/ways and dual carriageways despite what I said above for instance.

Agreed wildman, and what it will also do is change other people's perception of you, i.e. if you are unfortunate enough to be hit by some blind git the write up will include the fact that you were wearing a HiViz item of clothing rather than all black and this will stand in your favour both with witnesses and when fighting your corner in the insurance battle.

I have learned recently that many things to do with "advanced/safer" riding are to do with how other people (especially non-bikers) will perceive an action.

Changing the subject slightly.
When you talk about "bikers" please do not include me, as I absolutely detest that particular label. I am a motorcyclist.
I personally think it conjures up a picture of a leather clad, greasy, hairy fat bastard that runs down children and old ladies for fun. That may be you lot but it aint me, so ner! Laughing Laughing

Well now........Ever since hitting a sherpa van head on at 40 mph when he turned across me at some traffic lights in 1980, I ALWAYS ride with Hi-Viz jacket and headlight on ever since.

Like some have said previously, I just feel safer and I do know that I have escaped further pain as a consequence on more than one occasion. I couldn't care less whether I look stupid or not really.

I was lucky in 1980. I escaped with only severe bruising from neck to toes, even though the RD250 was wrecked. The bike threw me up and over and I landed in a shop doorway.

Remember, as motorcyclists, ultimately only us as individuals can protect ourselves from an early grave, or even worse, legislation banning bikes altogether.......

P.S. My son lost one of his best mates 2 years ago on the A534 at Faddiley in Cheshire. It could have easily been both of them. Just a bit too fast into a left hand bend. One of the group of 4 was an instructor too. Certainly made me stop and think.

That's exactly why the IAM et all hold no creedance with me. They bang on about safety, control, speed limits... and then....

I know a guy who owns a small bike shop... he recons a large proportion of his business is fixing bikes crashed by the Thames Valley IAM group... Hell Sandra's IAM instructor was almost bragging that he's written off two bikes in four years.... What's he want a feccin medal??

Seems to me there are far too many IAMers that hide benhind the badge 'cos in the end they just ride like pilocks.

Yeah I KNOW its a generalisation but I haven't yet met anyone you has ridden well enough to change my opinion Smile

Phooey is a phenominal road rider - with all the "credentials" you'd admire... he binned it too.

Just a matter of time however good you are. VR binned it the other day, and that's pretty piss-poor for the latest incarnation of baby jebus!

Your bike colour is a major factor.

I ride around London and had a silver Fazer and orange dayglow leathers. I used to get cut up and pulled out on all the time.

Switched to a Yellow Triumph TT600 and black leathers and I hardly ever get people pulling out on me.

If you are behind a faring wearing a ruck sack a Hi-vis jacket makes bugger all difference.

If this Phooey guy really did ride like Rossi I'd drink his bath water Smile
