I cannot answer this question on the grounds it may incriminate me.

I also claim the Fifth Amendment.

basically white lines, and to a greater extent a single white and broken line on one side, are used far too often these days

This is because Mr (or Ms) average road user cannot read the road and make informed decisions about where and when it is in fact likely to be safe to overtake. Also average road user generally does not have the performace/size advantages of a motorcycle to pass in those places.

Yes I cross solid white lines on occasions but only when I consider it safe to do so and when entirely necessary. It's my life and my licence at stake if I choose to do this!

I will overtake on white lines if I can see that the road ahead is clear.

You are allowed to overtake on Solid White Lines according to the Highway code.

You can cross the line to turn right, into a road or driveway etc. You are allowed to cross the white line when ordered to do so, eg by the police. You are allowed to cross the white line to pass an obstruction in the road, eg broken down car. You are allowed to cross the white line to overtake a slow moving vehicle eg Milk Float.

Now what constitutes slow is open to debate.

Chuffs is spot on - whenever anything uses a descriptive word like "slow" then you can always argue your case Laughing (just for the most part they'll probably do ya anyway)..

but on the other hand, you dont always have to cross the lines to overtake Twisted Evil

Direct from the Highway Code Sorry Jam and Chuffs the slow bit is specific!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

108: Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph or less.
Laws RTA sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 26

I did say that what constituted slow was open to debate and I think any self respecting person whould take into account the speed limit of the road in question in the first place. Something doing 10mph on a National Speed limit road is ridiculous, infact, 20mph is ridiculous (taking it that there is no traffic jam or queue etc). Usually you can get past most traffic without even touching let alone going over the white line if you are on a motorbike, well unless you have a lardy bike, a car/van etc is a different matter entirely.

That's when the pavement comes in handy Wink Smile

Do be aware that the rozzers have reportedly been known to use "white line camera's" allegedly they've used them on the mayday Hastings run...

I don't as a rule.

Sometimes I do. Only in an emergency, like when I have to get past a car when doing 170mph past a school in rush hour. Wink

Think you'll find that cars at traffic lights etc are not classed as stationary for the purpose of the code.

incidently it really buggs me when a solid white line becomes a broken one for a junction.

i appreciate that this is for people turning right (although apparently your allowed to cross em to turn right anyway)

but i just think 'some poor bastards gunna see the broken white line, not see the junction and hit summut turning right'

it has always tickled me a little, doubt that will ever change.
