Very productive day,

phoned up to book my bike in for a service "we've just had a cancellation, bring it 'round now if you like". so that's that done

Went to post office to collect package with my new RAM mount and TomTom charging cable.

Washed and polished the bike

Wired in the heated grips into the ignition (dealer fitter them direct to the battery Rolling Eyes)

Fitted TomTom stuff

And had time to play with the kids

There's a very good reason he did that. Rolling Eyes
The current draw of heated grips is normally high enough to blow the ignition fuse at the least and melt the wiring at worst. I personally would have wired a relay into the ignition circuit so that they were powered on (Direct from the battery) when the ignition was switched on. That's just me though. Smile

The grips draw 2.1 amps at each grip at full power, and it comes with a in-line 5 amp fuse. If there was any probs then I think it would blow that 5 amp fuse way before blowing the 15 amp ignition fuse.

But, thanks for that anyway Smile

I see what your saying and its logical, but look at all the other loads running through that 15 amp fuse as well. Add up all the loads and your probably not too far off the limit so to speak.

Yes, you are right.

When i said ignition, i haven't actually taken it from the ignition circuit itself, i've used a seperate 15A circuit which runs most of the lighting, tail light, brake light, indicators etc which obviously comes on with the ignition. It's what i did on my 650 and i've had no probs for over two years with that. And (apparantly) these new grips draws even less that the older design grips

I will run off and do my sums though !!!!!!

Thanks Bazza

I did say that's just me. You are free to do it in whatever way you please tbh. The shop however will always take a cautious approach (or they should) when dealing with a customers bike. After all it's way better to risk flattening their battery than burning out their wiring. Smile

Thanks Widman, Barry, Lost and WD

Had a trawl though some websites today having a look at the wiring and the best way forward. There is a definate difference of opinion of the best way, however, the majority do seem to go with a relay which in all honesty I hadn't considered.

Found this site helpful www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/relay.php

The reason I didn't want the grips straight from the battery is incase I left them on and come back to a flat battery. But, it appears that the grips I have got will automatically switch off if it detects that the battery is draining so it might all be a waste of time anyway (if only i was given the instructions Rolling Eyes )

I think the way forward now is to revert it back to the battery, switch it on, turn the ignition off and make sure it does cut out, if it does then leave it to the battery with the in-line fuse it is supplied with for protection.

If it doesn't switch itself off then the relay will be the way forward. (and a battery re-charge)

Or is that a bad idea ???

I’ve just moved this to Tech Questions to avoid sending this “What made me smile” thread even further off topic http://www.boxhill.co.uk/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16381
