Was talking to a colleague this morning about a meal he went out for the other day with some friends... at the end of the meal they divided the total of the bill between the number there, and his "share" came to double what his actual bill would have been... is this fair - he had a small main course and just water with his meal, others had 3 courses, pre-meal drinks and loads of plonk with the meal and that was all on the bill too..
He's not exactly flush, and he chose a small meal/not drinking to keep his costs down, he was then told by the pissed arseholes that he was out of order for not wanting to subsidise their selfish drinking. _________________

depends on the friends and company;
Few of us who go out often for meals nearly always split the bill...
(does often mean that HFB not only drives us but pays to get us tipsy too, I drive sometimes to try and even it up)
I think when in large groups of people who are not that close friends people should say if they want to stick to own bill before the meal so there is no misunderstanding _________________

Some friends they are then
If you all have roughly the same, then I don't see them problem of sharing the Bill.
However if one person only had a small meal, as you have said above, then IMHO it's unfair.
Of course the best way is to leg it before the bill arrives, and let them all pay for the cost of the meals _________________ “There comes a point in your life when you realise who really matters, who never did, and who always will.”

Quite... But I still think it's out of order for anyone - friends or otherwise to throw back drinks excessively and expect anyone else to subsidise it, that's all _________________

Totally agree but by the time they are drunk it is little late to be having sensible conversation, hence saying earlier _________________

I agree with the Tiger
If it come to a similiar amount then split 3 ways, no probs.
But if people are drinking more, or ordering the most expensive things on the menu then they shouldn't be subsidised. They should either throw in more cash at the end or get seperate bills.
I certainly wouldn't subsidise them and i couldn't give a f*ck if I upset the selfish b'stards telling them so. They could call be a 'tight arse' all they like |

It depends on how much difference there is between the cost of what you have had and everyone else really.
In this case it sounds like your mate got a bit stitched up. I'd say he should have spoken up, but of course you don't want to sound too Jewish really. Unless you are a Spurs fan. |

Tis the same for rounds of drinks..... some buy and some don't and there have been a few folk on here saddled with a hefty round i.e. £30 - £40 because everybody said yes please and didn't stop to think how much it would cost _________________ Boxhill Chippendales

Meals are different but drinking should always be a wip, soft drinks are as expensive if not more in some places.
Mouse you can be in charge of the bills and wip for the trip well volunteered! _________________ Speed Limits are Minimums and remember Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one

I dont drink.
Most people I go out with know this and I end up paying for my food only or not at all as the drinks bill is so big the food bill is almost insignificant _________________

Yeah, but, this is about a meal bill, not a whip (the clue is in the title)

In that case, everyone pays for their own. Simple
You can't expect someone who had only a cheaper main meal to pay the same as someone who had starter, main, dessert, coffee, liquor
It will stop piss-takers ordering the most expensive things on the menu, knowing others will pay towards it.
But, a whip for the bar i do agree with, it will all avarage out to be roughly the same |

Meals are different meaning that you can't just expect to throw twenty quid in and have a £25 meal, but drinking should always be a wip, soft drinks are as expensive if not more in some places.

Still comes down to the same thing there will always be someone being a bit shy getting there's or the first round in and having a wip negates the problem! The same as someone buying an expensive amount of food and being shy with coughing up there fair share!

Yes, looks like your friend was stitched up on that occasion, but it could have been avoided if HE had stated up front that he wanted to stay out of any pool, because he was a bit skint but still wanted to come out to play, and that he'd be happy to pay his way for food and drink. He would then have to stick with it and NOT accept the odd glass of wine from the "oh go on, I insist" people who pour from the bottle on the table, cos then it wouldn't be fair to every one who IS putting money into the remaining pot.
What gets me is the people who say "I'll stay out of the pot because I'm skint" or "I'll just have a starter", put a fiver into the pot and then proceed to stuff their faces with other people's dinners and accept drinks, only for people who are just as skint but not wanting to make a fuss to have to subsidise them.
Nothing to do with anyone on BHF by the way, but happened a few years ago with a curry for 18 people when 4 decided to play the "poor student" card and proceeded to sponge off everyone else and drink LOADS more than a lot who were on tap water. I ended up mentioning to them that it wasn't well received and they hadn't played fair, then then threw their teddies out of the pram and went off in a sulk.
The dangers of going out as grown-ups with people who are barely out of nappies... |
