Maybe, who knows. I do know I was pretty pissed off when I found that out from a friend. He failed his first driving test for doing over shoulder checks instead of just using his mirrors.
How retarded does it get? They make bike tests harder, yet they teach drivers to do things that will result in killing motorcyclists. You can spot motorcyclists on the Tube doing lifesavers before they change course for a different ticket barrier etc _________________

Yep, I'm still sending the receipts for my physio to the insurance company! _________________ We are all born mad. Some remain so. ~ Samuel Beckett 1906-1989 |

Doesn't sound right to me. You have to check your blind spot before pulling away in your test. |

As he failed his test for doing over shoulder checks, I'd call that confirmed.
Also, a few other people who I was talking to at the same time stated that they had had the same experience with the DVLA. Not necessarily failing due to it, but they did state that the DVLA said they should not do shoulder checks (only use their mirrors) except when joining a motorway or pulling away. The reason given is that apparently doing a shoulder check takes your attention away from the road ahead of you, thus creating risk. Therefore, don't do shoulder check = risk reduction because you're not thinking about what's behind you.
And yeah, I thought it was bollocks when he first told me, until he explained about failing his test for it and the reasoning the DVLA guy gave him. _________________ You start the game of life with a full pot o' luck and an empty pot o' experience. If you're keeping a constant check on your mirrors you should know what's around you and likely to come up behind.
Still check over my shoulder though for car, bike and walking! _________________ We are all born mad. Some remain so. ~ Samuel Beckett 1906-1989 |

Don't hurt - and as Wivvs pointed out - you can always spot a Motorcylist when walking..
Left hand checks don't make sense for a turn to me unless you have bad road positioning - i.e. are way too offside - otherwise you are already controlling the traffic. The rare exception would be some nut on a scooter (not BarryH) doing an insane MotoGP up the inside.. but I'd still rely on ears, mirrors and peripheral vision before taking my attention off where I'm going.
Shoulder checks (offside) are more important.. _________________ If the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me... |

Have you seen the test report? Was it for three minors and if so, what driving error was it? I'm not convinced. |
